After the fun day in Gaziantep we all packed up together and hit the road at about 4am local time to head to the Mediterranean. No time to waste on sleep. The drive took about four hours and we arrived in Mersin at about 8:00am to eat breakfast and swim in the ocean. It was the most magical thing in the world – swimming in the mild crystal clear ocean first thing in the morning, then eating our breakfast of gözleme and drinking çay at the beach.

We continued on to Anamur where we would spend the night. Stopping on the road for a picnic lunch and another swim in a place where a freezing freshwater river meets the ocean, and makes for fun swimming, dipping in one then the other.

Anamur is the most charming little town, quiet and not very touristy. We hit it right at the perfect time of year, the beginning of September is right after the main tourist season ended. We were able to get a great deal on the hotel, 30TL ($14 USD) per person per night which included breakfast. This was because my fabulous Turkish guides negotiated for like 20 minutes to get a great deal. If you didn’t know, Turks haggle over just about everything. Speaking almost no Turkish, I am often asked to not talk until negotiations are completed because as soon as they think you are from elsewhere, prices suddenly go way up. This is a wonderful place to vacation, but without speaking turkish or having a turkish-speaking guide, you are going to get practically robbed by hotels, shops, and any tourist services.

Once we were settled in and had a quick nap, it was time to go find our dinner. We drove down some country roads to get to our restaurant – a fish farm and restaurant along a small river. In my family growing up we would always joke about restaurants where it took a long time to be served food that first they must have had to catch the cow, then cook it. Well, this restaurant I kid you not, will catch the fish, kill them (let them sit out in the air for 10 minutes because I guess that makes them taste better?), then cook them. It took a while but was pretty decent fish.

After dinner we went to an amazing castle and city ruins, called Anamuryum, from about the 4th century and swam in the ocean next to the ruins. Pretty darn awesome way to end the day.
